Avatars of Lord Vishnu and their meanings

Before we begin, we must know that avatar is a Sanskrit word which means ‘descent’. Whenever evil rises and goodness is threatened, Lord Vishnu comes to the Earth in a form that suits the situation. 

All the incarnations together are known as Dashavatara, which means the ten main avatars. The most interesting part is that these avatars appear in a different time period, and they teach a different life lesson.

1. Matsya Avatar

The first avatar of Vishnu ji was a fish that was known as the Matsya Avatar. At that time, Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish to save the first man (Vaivasvata Manu) and the 7 sages during a great flood. By protecting and guiding them safely through the flood, he ensured that life on Earth could continue. 

2. Kurma Avatar

The second avatar of Lord Vishnu is the turtle form known as Kurma. All the powers of the gods were lost because they got so full of pride. They even got a curse from Sage Durvasa.  So, to help them out, Lord Vishnu became a turtle and held Mount Mandara on his back during the churning of the ocean. This avatar teaches us that power and wealth never stay with the one who is arrogant and insecure.

3. Varaha Avatar

Varaha was the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Varaha was the boar avatar. He came when the demon Hiranyaksha dragged the earth into deep cosmic waters. At that time, Earth was worshipped as Goddess Bhudevi. 

Lord Vishnu then defeated the demon and lifted the Earth from the water with his tusk. He then restored Bhudevi to her rightful place in the universe. This Avatar shows us that protecting nature is a divine responsibility. 

4. Narasimha Avatar

Narasimha was the fourth avatar of Lord Vishnu. He appeared very unique because he was half human and half lion. He came into existence because he had to defeat the demon Hiranyakashipu. This demon has received a powerful boon from Lord Brahma. 

The boon was that he could not be killed:

• by a man or an animal

• indoors or outdoors. 

• during day or night

• on earth or in the sky 

• by anything living or non-living. 

To overcome this, Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha. At dusk, he placed the demon on his lap at the doorway of the palace. He then killed him using his claws. In this way, Lord Vishnu restored justice. This avatar shows us that true faith can overcome any fear and injustice. 

5. Vamana Avatar

Lord Vishnu Ji’s fifth incarnation was Vamana, a dwarf who looked humble. This was actually the first time Lord Vishnu took the human form, carrying a simple wooden umbrella. 

Vamana came to restore balance in the heavens because King Mahabali had taken control of all three worlds. Vamana asked King Mahabali for just three steps of land. The king’s teacher, Sukracharya, warned him, but the king still agreed. 

As soon as the wish was granted, Vamana revealed his divine form and grew into an enormous size. In one step, he covered the Earth; in the second, he covered the underworld. When there was no space left for the third step, King Mahabali offered his own head. Lord Vishnu was pleased with his humility and devotion. He placed his foot on Mahabali’s head and granted him eternal life. From this avatar, we learn that humility is greater than pride. 

6. Parashurama Avatar

Parashurama was the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. When King Kartavirya Arjuna destroyed his father’s ashram and later caused Jamadagni’s death, Parashurama stood against injustice and defeated the king and his army.

7. Ram Avatar 

Ram was the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is remembered as the perfect example of righteousness. When Rama was sent into exile for 14 years, Ravan abducted Sita maa and took her to Lanka. 

Then Ram, along with Lakshman and Hanuman, fought and killed Ravana and rescued Sita Maa. This avatar taught us to stay true to our values even in the toughest times.

8. Balarama Avatar

According to some beliefs, Lord Balaram is considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu instead of Lord Buddha. That’s why Balaram becomes the 8th avatar, and Lord Krishna becomes the 9th.

Lord Balaram came in the Dwapar Yuga. He is also the elder brother of Lord Krishna, who is also an incarnation of Vishnu. Balaram is usually shown holding a plough in his hand.  Lord Balaram is associated with farming and agriculture and is respected for his great physical power. 

9. Krishna Avatar

Many people search for all avatars of Lord Krishna or avatars of Shri Krishna, but Krishna is himself considered as Vishnu ji’s avatar. Lord Krishna is one of the most loved and worshipped avatars. Like lord Rama, Krishna ji appeared to protect righteousness and guide humanity. A beautiful Krishna painting can always be seen at home because people feel a deep connection with him. 

10. Kalki Avatar 

According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu will appear as Kalki as his tenth avatar. This event will happen at Kali Yuga. The name Kalki is often understood as the one who destroys evil and restores balance. 

Scriptures have mentioned that Kalki will come riding a white horse with sword. This will mark the end of darkness and wrongdoing in the world. With the coming of Kalki, a new age will come known as Satya Yuga.
